Visual artist with a focus in painting
Painting is regularly seen as an outdated discipline. For whoever passes by may stop, look, but not truly see.
In challenge to our world’s fast-paced digital era, paintings without clear formal interpretations demand close attention from the public. Born from a slow and continuous process, painting walks a path from beginning to a “non-end,” like a promise with no conclusion. Although never reaching its final destination, the path becomes the place of creation.
When confronted with Catarina Lucas’s work, we can clearly understand that through these paths she asks us to take a moment to reflect on what painting is in the present.
Suggestive shapes and strong gestures are born from a subconscious sphere, presenting themselves in forms of commotion and transformation. Dense with undefined constructions, these forms are constantly constructed and deconstructed. Catarina Lucas establishes an environment of contradictions and tensions, creating, subconsciously and inevitability, an undisciplined and strange place.
Catarina Lucas’s works don’t look for a final image; there are no concrete ideas. She defends painting as the act of painting itself, the only certain thing in her work being its constant transformative process.
A painting that doesn’t assume itself to be something else other than what it is, neither more or less, defends a practice that is supported by the idea of action. This practice requires a blind confidence in intuition and instinct, both fundamental roles in the creative process. Like an automatic reaction, the artist allows her impulses to lead her, without concerns of formal logic. In result, she challenges the viewer to rationalize her works in their own way.
As the mediator between herself and the viewer, Catarina Lucas extends an invitation into the simplification and demystification of the discipline of Painting. Her artworks ask to be simply seen instead of meticulously interpreted.
